Fillings

Fillings

Through regular checkups, Dr. White can detect whether you have a cavity that needs to be filled. Cavities are tooth decay that can be discovered through dental examinations and x-rays.

Dr. White, a family dentist, has performed hundreds of fillings. A filling is a way to close off the space after the decay from the tooth is extracted. The space is then filled with a metal alloy or composite resin so that bacteria can no longer enter preventing further decay of the tooth. Fillings restore your tooth back to its normal function and shape.

Amalgam Fillings
Dental professionals have been using amalgam fillings for nearly two centuries. Amalgam Fillings are composed of several metals, and when they come together, they form a soft material that can be used to build your tooth back to its original form. After placement in your mouth, the amalgam begins to harden as the metals integrate together. Amalgam fillings are often used in back teeth that will not be seen when you smile.

Amalgam fillings are stronger than composite fillings that are used in cosmetic dentistry. Amalgam fillings are used on back teeth because that is where the majority of pressure is when you bite down. Since amalgam is made of various metals, it is a very strong material.

Composite Fillings (see Composite Fillings)
Composite fillings are newer than amalgam fillings and are constantly improving. It is used primarily in cosmetic dentistry. The composite resin is about the consistency of modeling clay. In order for the composite to harden, a bright blue light is used. Through a series of chemical reactions, the composite resin hardens into a very strong material that looks very much like a natural tooth.

Dr. White, a family dentist, will consult with you to advise on what filling is right for your teeth. A family dentist knows your family’s dental history. Dr. White maintains relationships with his patients to assure their teeth stay healthy throughout their life.
